Models- ideas for hair and makeup

I have been looking at ideas for our models in the projection. I was thinking that we want something striking and non-human but not too fussy to distract away from the projected images.

We could dress the models in simple white clothing and maybe paint their arms and faces white. For the makeup we could maybe
use black lipstick and draw a line across their eyes as a kind of mask. We could also maybe look into contact lenses to make the model look less human. We could have all the models looking the same or have some differences between them if we use more than one.

A tight bun on the top of the head is a good idea to use as it is simple and holds the hair out of the way.
I think that the black and white theme could work really well on the models. It would give a blank canvas for the projection. I'll do some sketches of different ideas that I have.

Art projections

An animation of our concept.

This is an animation that I have created to demonstrate the concept that our group is trying to achieve. The images on the dress are by other members in the group. I have tried to create a sense of having clothing that can be altered by having images projected on to it. We want to create clothing that is truly temporary and carries with it a real feel of 'Manchester', and what the city stands for, culturally.

Live Projection Mapping Test Shoot on Vimeo

Live Projection Mapping Test Shoot on Vimeo
After todays attempts of projecting on the body, I found this video. They have succesfully projected their designs onto the body without it hitting any of the background, so it is possible!!

Hotspur House Filming

Today we have tried and tested our ideas in Hotspur House, applying the projection to a person in white in the warehouse. We wanted to see if our vision of virtual clothes could actually been made into a reality.

We met firstly in the studio to collate all our images and drawings/samples. When our work was put together it works well within the patchwork brief and shows the different identities of Manchester. With these images we made a short video to use for the projection. With this ready and loaded we took out projection to the warehouse.

With the projection set up in two different locations, the light was a big issue. Due to it being bright in a lot of the spaces, the projection wasn't coming up on the top as well as it could have. The projection also showed on the wall, it is a problem but it can be over come relatively easily with the positioning of the camera.

This short video shows our ideas coming along since our first attempt. We used a dark corner and filmed from the side to show the projection. We're finding a better location for filming and going to use some models in all white to show our ideas better.

Drawing... Inspiration...Developemt

We are beginning to produce a collection of drawings to compliment our visual research, by collecting them together in our studio space we can all continue to evaluate our progress and make links within cultures, aiding us to consider ideas for our final design. We have agreed to each have a set of ten drawings/developments by Friday 27h when we meet as a group.....

Walter Van Beirendonck - ' Dream the World Awake'

After a recent tutorial with Julie, we discovered the work of fashion maverick Walter Van Beirendonck.  We were particualry drawn to his recent retrospective at the Antwerp Fashion Muesuem, exhibiting his finest pieces of photography and film.  The following video provided great inspriration for our developing ideas. It immediatly entises its audience and bears a simple yet quirky and effective structure.  We all agree we hope to try and emulate the idea of models approaching on some sort of moving treadmill with a stark white background, however we would have the outfits appearing as a projections rather than actual garments.  The bold use of colour is also significant, should we consider this for our film? ......

Colour References

Developing Pride inspiration and ideas, colours that reference my theme.....

Highlighting Culture in Manchester; Canal Street Area

In response to our group discussion, I was given the area surrounding Canal St to visit and collect imagery that represented 'culture'. This however proved difficult as at 11.00am, the street lacked vibrancy.  In reflection I chose to focus more on the areas connections with Gay Pride (A extremely colourful and significant aspect of Manchesters metroplolitan culture) rather than the buildings and grounds themselves.
The collection of visuals below, highlight the bold declarations of unity, strong use of colour and passion for overwhelming apparel providing inspriation for our 'patchwork culture projection'.

Lightbox Installations

During our discussion dated 12th March, we discussed the possibilty of some sort of 'projection' featuring in our final presentation of work, we all seemed to agree this could be a effective way to communicate our ideas. I recently came across the eco initive 'make a forest' created by Anne van der Zwaag and Joanna van der Zanden.  In an attempt not to create a solution for deforestation, but to use art art and design to question whehter the use of one artificial tree could have an impact on a local area, they created artificial trees.  The initive itself was fitting in relation to sustainable design for the future, however it was the way the art was conveyed that caught my attention....
... A series of sketches of trees made from everyday objects were made, and then photographed. They were then exhibited as a series of 'lightbox installations'.  The images below illustatre how these illusions appeared.  To me they are extremely effective, maybe we could present our final concept in this way in the space provided??

Film Camera

Whilst going around Northern Quarter taking photos and drawing images, I used a rang of cameras. I have taken my first set of photos on a Fujifilm digital camera, these have been useful for drawing purposes. The second set have been taken on a Olympus film camera.

These have come out very different, some are in clear focus, some have been effected by the sun and others have been over laid. The last photo I took was on my Polaroid camera in silver tones. This was a bit over exposed but the outcome is fairly interesting and could make a good print.
